Many people move to France convinced that living in the country is the final step toward fluency. After all, you’re surrounded by French every day. You hear it in cafés, at the supermarket, on the train, at your children’s school, and during every administrative appointment. So… why does speaking still feel so difficult?

Why do you still freeze when someone asks you a simple question? Why do you leave conversations thinking

«I knew exactly what I wanted to say… but my brain just stopped working.»

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know something important: The problem isn’t that you’re incapable of learning French.

The problem is that living in France and learning how to use your environment to improve your French are two completely different things.

Why Living in France is Not Enough

One of the biggest myths about language learning is this:

«If I move to France, I’ll naturally become fluent.»

It sounds logical. And yes, living in France gives you something incredibly valuable: Opportunities. Every single day, you’re surrounded by authentic French. But opportunities are not the same as practice.

How many times have you…

• smiled instead of speaking?
• ordered exactly the same thing because you don’t know how to ask for something else?
• avoided asking a question because you didn’t want to hold up the queue?
• switched to English the moment someone offered?
• let your partner make the phone call?

You were physically in France. But your brain wasn’t actually practising speaking French. Many expats spend months, or even years listening to French without actively using it. Listening is essential. Reading is helpful. Watching Netflix in French is great. But none of these activities replaces speaking.

Speaking is its own skill. It’s a bit like learning to swim. You can read books about swimming. You can watch videos. You can understand every movement. But until you actually get into the water, your body won’t develop the confidence and reflexes you need. French works exactly the same way.

The Biggest Mistakes Expats Make

Mistake #1: Waiting Until You Feel Ready

«I’ll start talking when my grammar is better.»

«I need more vocabulary first.»

«I don’t want to make mistakes.»

This mindset feels safe. But it actually keeps you stuck.

Confidence doesn’t appear first. Action comes first and confidence grows afterwards. Every confident French speaker you know once made hundreds of mistakes.

The difference? They kept speaking anyway.

Mistake #2: Treating French Like a School Subject

Many learners continue studying French exactly as they did at school. They complete grammar exercises, they memorise vocabulary lists, they use language-learning apps every day.

These tools can absolutely help. But here’s the problem: Real conversations don’t happen in grammar books.

Nobody at the bakery is going to ask you to conjugate the imperfect tense.

In real life, people interrupt, they speak quickly, they change topics without waiting for you, they use expressions you’ve never learned.

The goal isn’t perfect grammar. The goal is learning to communicate despite the imperfections.

Mistake #3: Avoiding Small Conversations

Many learners think practice only counts if they’re having long conversations.

Actually… The most powerful conversations often last less than thirty seconds.

Talking to the cashier, greeting your neighbour, asking a question at the market, thanking the pharmacist, chatting with another parent outside school.

These tiny interactions might seem insignificant. But together, they create hundreds of opportunities every month. Each one teaches your brain:

«I can do this.»

How to Turn Everyday Life into French Practice

Here’s the good news. You probably don’t need more study time. You simply need to use your existing routine differently.

Instead of waiting for a one-hour lesson every week, start seeing your entire day as your classroom.

Let’s look at some examples.

At the Bakery

Instead of saying: «Une baguette, s’il vous plaît.»

Challenge yourself.

• Ask which bread they recommend: «Qu’est-ce que vous me recommandez ?»
• Comment on the weather: «Il y a du soleil aujourd’hui, ça fait du bien!
• Ask wheather a product is homemade: «C’est fait maison ?»
• Ask at what time they close: «Vous fermez à quelle heure ?

Congratulations. Bravo!

At the Supermarket

Instead of silently shopping…

At the Market

French markets are fantastic places for practising French because conversations are naturally expected.

Ask questions.

French vendors usually enjoy chatting. And if you go regularly, they will start recognising you and you’ll create a very nice relationship!

If you’re a parent, school offers dozens of speaking opportunities every month.

At the Hairdresser

Instead of sitting silently…

Prepare three questions before you go.

Even if the conversation only lasts five minutes, you’ve just practised spontaneous French.

Stop Trying to Speak Perfect French

Here’s something I tell all my students.

French people are not expecting perfection. They’re expecting communication. Most of the pressure you feel comes from yourself. You notice every mistake, you replay every conversation afterwards, you analyse every sentence.

Most of French people will remember what you said, your energy, and not your grammar mistakes.

Instead of asking yourself:

«Did I make mistakes?»

Ask yourself:

«Did we understand each other?»

A Simple Weekly Routine That Actually Works

You don’t need to study three hours every day. Consistency beats intensity.

Here’s a simple routine.

Every day

One real conversation. Even if it lasts thirty seconds.

Three times a week

Listen to ten minutes of authentic French and shadow it (repeat what they say out loud).

Not to understand every word. To get used to rhythm and pronunciation.

Once a week

Have a longer conversation with someone who encourages you to speak. This is where conversation groups or a tutor can make a huge difference. You finally have space to experiment without worrying or scared of an awkward situation.

Every evening

Write down one new expression or word you heard that day. Just one.

By the end of the year, you’ll have learned hundreds of expressions that actually exist in real life, not just in textbooks.

The Real Secret Isn’t More French

Most people think they need:

• more vocabulary
• more grammar
• more exercises

Usually, they simply need more opportunities to speak in a safe environment.

That’s why my students don’t just learn French. They learn how to use French, they practise the conversations they actually have every week.

• Talking to neighbours.
• Going to the doctor.
• Meeting other parents.
• Ordering properly at restaurants and cafés.
• Calling the plumber.
• Booking appointments.

These are the conversations that change everyday life.

You’re Probably Closer Than You Think!

One of the biggest surprises my students experience is realising how much French they already know.

The problem isn’t always knowledge. It’s access.

Stress makes your brain temporarily hide the words you already know. The more relaxed you become, the easier those words come back.

Confidence isn’t built by memorising another list of vocabulary. It’s built by collecting small successes.

One conversation. Then another. Then another.

Eventually, speaking French starts feeling… normal.

Living in France is an incredible opportunity. But it’s only the beginning.

Immersion opens the door. You still have to walk through it.

If you start seeing your everyday life as your French classroom, you’ll stop waiting for confidence to magically appear. Instead, you’ll build it, one conversation at a time.

And one day, without even realising it, you’ll leave a conversation thinking:

«Wow… I actually did it in French.»

Those moments are what make all the difference.
